A Nurse on the Mission of Healing, Service, and Hope

My journey began in the classrooms of the Aga Khan University Examination Board’s Middle School Programme. At that age, I didn’t fully understand the weight of what I was learning. Yet, through projects that asked us to look beyond ourselves, and teachers who encouraged us to think deeply and reflect, I began to discover something powerful: that education is not just about knowledge, it is about responsibility. From those early middle school years through my Higher Secondary School Certificate, the system gave me not only the qualifications to succeed, but also the responsibility to give back—to shoulder the duty of making a positive difference in people’s lives. I chose the path of becoming a nurse. Today, as a Registered Nurse in the Cardiac Care Unit of the Aga Khan University Hospital, I am often the first person my patients see. In those fragile moments—when fear overshadows hope, or when pain seems unbearable—I know that my presence, my words, and even the smallest gestures of kindness can ease their burden. Nursing, for me, is not simply about treatment; it is about healing with humanity, about reminding patients that they are not alone. With a passion for learning and a desire to grow, I attended the Sister2Sister Exchange Program in the United States. It was an experience that broadened my vision of healthcare, allowing me to participate in international dialogue, observe diverse practices, and carry back new ideas for my community. What gave me strength during that time was the realisation that I wasn’t building new skills from scratch—the critical thinking, communication, and confidence to share my ideas had been with me all along. Those were the very tools my education had placed in my hands years ago.

Looking ahead, I aspire to become a nurse practitioner, to contribute to evidence-based research, and to be part of shaping a healthcare system that is safe, accessible, and effective for all. I am inspired by the footsteps of those before me, who proved that service and leadership are inseparable. Their journeys fuel my determination to work harder and to keep moving forward with purpose. When I reflect on my journey, I realise it has always been leading me back home. The exchange program abroad expanded my vision, and passing the NCBSN NCLEX exam gave me the confidence to meet international standards as a nurse. But these milestones were never about leaving—they were about returning stronger. Today, I bring those experiences into every ward, every patient interaction, and every act of care. For me, nursing is more than a profession; it is a commitment to help shape a future where healthcare in Pakistan is not only accessible but also filled with hope and dignity for all.
